Gear up for Dove Season 2016

Hunting

Dove season is right around the corner. Opening weekend of dove season is one of my favorite weekends of the year. Not only because it marks the start of hunting season, but because it is a weekend that brings family and friends together in the field. This year’s ninety-day dove season will mark the longest season Texas has seen in over 80 years! The added days of the season was tacked on so hunters could take advantage of northern dove migrating into and through Texas as the temperatures begin to drop in early November. Days have also been added to the back end of the season in south Texas for the special white winged dove area.

With the drought in our rear view mirror and highly productive year biologist around the state saw a great gains in dove numbers. The productive year has provided adequate food and cover for dove adding to our already strong population. With the extended season and healthy population, there should be no excuse for finding the time and birds to make unforgettable memories with your friends and family.

Here are a few tips for a successful and safe outing:

  • Water: It will be hot out there so grab more water than you think you need.
  • Practice: Practice prior to going out in the field to hunt. This will allow you to check all necessary equipment and get your shot back on target.
  • Scout: If you want to be sure to have a good hunt take the time to scout a few areas a few days or weeks leading up to your hunt. If this is not an option try setting up close to water and food source.
  • Bug Spray: forgetting the bug spray may not be the worst thing you could forget but it makes it more enjoyable.
  • Safety: Make sure everyone follows proper safety guidelines.
